Promoting Black biologists and science literacy

Over the past few years, I have built a collection of "spotlights" on Black faculty in STEM aimed at a lay audience, to promote the work of these scientists and engage non-experts in thinking about scientific inquiry. Originally posted on Facebook throughout the month of February, these spotlights are now collected here.

If you are featured and would like to make an addition/correction (or if you would like me to take down your profile), please let me know! If you are a Black scientist who I have not written about and you would like to be featured in a future February, I would love to hear from you.

Erich Jarvis, Ph.D.

Professor of Neurobiology (Duke University)

Dr. Jarvis studies the brain and how it creates, understands, and learns vocal communication. His research involves birds and mice, although he’s very interested in how the lessons learned from these model organisms can be applied to humans as well.

Kenneth Olden, Ph.D.

Dean of the School of Public Health (City University of New York)

From 1991 to 2005, Dr. Olden served as the Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the branch of the National Instutes of Health (NIH) that focuses on how the environment impacts human health. He was the first African-American to head any of the institutes in the NIH.

James E. Bowman, M.D.

(1923-2011)

Dr. Bowman was the first African-American tenured professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, and an important figure in the intertwined histories of genetics and bioethics.

Donita Brady, Ph.D.

Presidential Assistant Professor of Cancer Biology (University of Pennsylvania)

Dr. Brady's research looks at copper and how it interacts with and impacts important cellular processes and pathways.

Folami Ideraabdullah, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Genetics and Nutrition (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill)

Dr. Ideraabdullah is interested in how genes and environment interact to result in traits (“phenotypes”), with a particular focus on nutrition.

Levi Garraway, M.D., Ph.D.

Senior Vice President of Global Oncology (Eli Lilly & Company).

Dr. Garraway was the first director of the Joint Center for Cancer Precision Medicine, a collaborative effort by the Dana-Farmer Cancer Institute, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, and the Broad Institute.

Ernest Everett Just, Ph.D.

(1883-1941)

Dr. Just is remembered as an internationally respected experimental biologist and for his work on the cell biology of fertilization.

Jane Cooke Wright, M.D.

(1919-2013)

Dr. Cooke Wright was a founding member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and a pioneer in the field of cancer research and treatment.

Georgia Dunston, Ph.D.

Professor of Microbiology (Howard University College of Medicine)

Dr. Dunston is the founding director of the National Human Genome Center at Howard University, a collaboration between the National Institutes of Health and Howard University that focuses on diseases disproportionately impacting African-Americans.
